October 9 The Bronzing of the Lions

Close up of Rufus Xavier

I bronzed and added premature patina to the lions that I purchased two weeks ago. They were formerly Plaster of Paris but bronze is much more fitting for a palace! And they have been named: Rufus Xavier (on the right) and Koning van Alle Diere which translates to “King of All Beasts” in Afrikaans (on the left). I bet you can tell who named whom….

If you want to fake bronze and patina your stuff, here’s what I use: for the lions, Modern Masters Metal Effects Oxidizing Bronze Paint and Blue Patina Aging Solution (follow the instructions and work outdoors or in a well ventilated area); for the base of the lions, Rustoleum Hammered Effects Paint in Black.

Bronze and faux patina on the lions, black paint on the base of the statue
Before: Plaster of Paris
