October 15 ABQ Roller Derby

“If you can’t play nice, play roller derby.”

Let me just start out by saying: these women kick ass! I went to my first roller derby bout today and it was awesome. The energy of the crowd, the seriousness of the competitors, everybody was out for a good time tonight and we had a blast. There was a lot of spirited cheering and although both sides gave their all, ABQ Roller Derby were victorious. Good family fun.

I don’t really understand Roller Derby but this is what I could make of it: Jammers have stars on their helmets and they score points by busting through the pack of skaters trying to block them and not let them through. The group of skaters that are blocking the Jammers are called the Blockers (they have solid colored helmets in their teams colors). There are Pivots who are at the front of the pack and they have a single stripe on their helmet, they set the pace for the rest of the pack. It is  a fast-paced, exciting game to watch, kinda like football on skates. It can get a little rough, too. So glad we won tickets to attend this event! There were record breaking roller derby bouts in Oakland in the ’70s for number of fans attending the Bay Bombers bouts, but that was a little before my time. Pretty Cool!
